Today the USS Kearsarge, a multipurpose amphibious assault ship will be entering the Grand Harbour to berth at Valletta Gateway Terminals during its' stay in Malta.
The 844-foot amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge made port on Wednesday and berthed at Magazine Wharf, Corradino. Resembling a small aircraft-carrier and classed as one of the largest amphibious warfare vessels in the US Navy, she carries several Harriers, a variety of helicopters, and three large air cushion landing craft.
She has a complement of 1,282 men, 193 officers and 1,700 marines. The Kearsarge also has the largest hospital facilities in the US navy worldwide.
The ship, which visited Malta in 2004, left the US at the end of July and Malta is her first port of call. It is believed to be leaving today for an undisclosed destination.
Yesterday morning, about 500 adults and children had the opportunity to tour the USS Kearsarge, meet her crew and marvel at her equipment and military hardware. The visitors were invited guests of the US Embassy.
